The Moth and the Flame

I thought of sharing an interesting theme I noted in few songs. The beautiful song (Tose Naina laage) has deeply spiritual lyrics where the specific lines (see below) on the "shama" and the "parwaana", which are the flame and moth, respectively, are too deep and literally define the whole essence of life. It talks of divine love and the test of love for both the moth and the flame...

Tose Naina Lage | तोसे नैना लागे | Anwar(2007) | Siddharth Koirala | Nauheed Cyrusi | Superhit Song

"Mohabbat ki hai daastan zindagi
Mohabbat na ho to kaha zindagi
Mohabbat to ek jaaveda zindagi hai
Tose naina laage

Shamaa ko pighalne ka armaan kyun hai
Patange ko jalne ka armaan kyun hai
isi shauk ka imtehaan zindagi hai..
"

Now, interestingly, there is another old Hindi song (Pyar Deewana Hota Hai 4K Song : Kishore Kumar Classics | Rajesh Khanna | Hindi Romantic-Kati Patang) with lyrics below that also dwells on the same idea somewhat and talks of how the moth is so consumed with love that it no longer cares about joy or sorrow but just to surrender to the light..

"Shamaa kahe parwaane se pare chalaa jaa
Meri tarah jal jaayega yaha nahi aa,
Wo nahin sunataa usko
Jal jaanaa hota hai
Har khushi se, har gham se,
begana hota hai
Pyaar deewana hota hai,
Mastana hota hai"

I also stumbled upon a Sufi tale of the moth and the fly (listen to the story here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DAJB-2dS7xy/?igsh=cHV3c3ljM3o4ZWc3) and was indeed in awe of it. Indeed, the one who is in search of light (out of true love) does not care about anything else but just the search and the surrender and ultimately becomes one with the flame....
