Reflections on a moving scene based on Death and Life from a Hindi movie (The Burning Train)

I wanted to share a certain sequence from an old Bollywood movie (The Burning Train, 1980). The movie itself was a blockbuster in its era, and although I have watched it in my childhood, I happened to rewatch it more than a year ago, and at that time, I realized a specific movie scene that was actually very deep and thoughtful, and I thought of posting about it on my blog. I decided to post my thoughts on that sequence. First of all, the particular movie scene I am talking about is available in the following clip of the movie from time stamp 2:23 to 6:40:

सीमा साथ मरने को तुम जुदाई कहती हो? सोचो ये मौत कितनी खूबसूरत होगी! | The Burning Train | Dharmendra

Basically, in this movie, an engineer (played by actor Vinod Khanna) builds a superfast train (called as the SuperFast Express) that was touted as the fastest train from Delhi to Mumbai. As the train takes its first journey after inauguration, one of his fellow engineers (out of sheer jealousy) hides an explosive in the train so that he can destroy it (although the train keeps on speeding as its major brakes fail due to the fire from explosion). The whole movie is based on the struggles and actions, including ultimately the main engineer (the actor Vinod Khanna) stepping into the train (his project and brainchild) quite like an action hero to save it, as it also had his own child travelling in it. Ultimately, in the end, the train does stop, and all its passengers are saved (something that happens in Bollywood movies but not in real life typically).

However, what captured my heart was the specific sequence (time stamp 2:23 to 6:40). Basically, two other actors (Jeetendra and Dharmendra) manage to solve a bottleneck (that of fire spreading from one train cabin to the other fast) by severing the cable that connected the compartments- this way the raging fire that was spreading did not get any more cabins to spread further; thus, the passengers managed to remain isolated in one big compartment of the superfast train. However, one of the older actors then remarks that although they have overcome fire, the train is still speeding without brakes, and so eventually it is destined to crash causing fatality, thus the small victory they achieved is temporary (note that by this time the savior actor has not yet embarked on the train). Read the dialogues:

Actor: “haan, aag to rok di, maut to nahi roki, maut to sirf tali hai, ruki to nahin. Ye train isi khoonkhari raftaar se bhaagti chali jayegi, jab tak ki maut ka station nahi aa jata.”

Others: “maut ka station?”

Actor: “Haan, maut ka station. Us station se jab ye train takrayegi to hum mein se koi nahi bachega, hum sab ke sab mar jayenge…sab ke sab..koi zinda nahi rahega…”

And after this, the scenes show shots of several actors and their stories and how they viewed the impending death, with part sorrow and resignation, but also then remembering God, which I found literary and depthful. The sequences of the several people who viewed impending death from their perspective are below:

1.     We are shown a Punjabi family where the mother is talking to her husband, holding her two children close, lamenting that she was crying not for herself but for her two children who have not even seen life that much and are still young. At that point, the husband consoles her and invokes God in his religion (Wahe Guru) and is seen praying.

2.     Next scene moves to the actor Dharmendra, where he is shown holding the actress Hema Malini (who had been separated from him for several years due to a small misunderstanding, but then they reunited on the train journey and reconciled) and they both lament that they just found each other back only to be separated by inevitable death so soon. But then the actor consoles her saying that they are not separated, as they both shall die together, and that death will be beautiful.

3.     We next see the second actor (Jeetendra) who was actually a thief, and he confesses to the actress (Neetu) that he originally came close to her on train to deceive her and steal her jewelry, but during the course of the journey, she in fact stole his heart, and he further confesses that if it were not for this disaster and chaos and fire and impending death, he may perhaps never have had the courage to reveal himself and his intentions to her. And we see that she also accepts that she already sensed his intentions but still fell in love with her eventually.

4.     Next, we see a doctor treating wounds of a patient who questions the point of it, given they are all destined to die in a matter of time. The doctor responds that a doctor is like the captain of a sinking ship; hence, he should continue to perform his duty (that of treating the wounded) until the last breath.

5.     Next, we see another group who remark to keep faith in God and everything should be alright.

6.     We then see the same old actor (whose dialogues I wrote down earlier) with his crying wife, where the wife is grieving that how will their children identify their burnt bodies after their death, and what if they end up hugging some stranger’s burnt body and lamenting for them. That particular dialogue felt too true but sad as well, and is a harsh reality.

7.     Next, we are shown two priests (one Hindu and other Islamic) talking and the Islamic priest (Maulana) remarks that he now understood that death is neither Hindu nor Muslim. And that indeed death has no religion.

8.     Next, we see a pregnant woman in labor with her mother, who is lamenting that what is the point of bringing a newborn into this world when that life is going to be taken in some minutes anyways. She is thus lamenting about the futility of delivering a child who may open his eyes only for them to be closed by the tragic death of the train journey.

9.     Lastly, we see a teacher surrounded by little children. The children ask her curiously what death was and will they die. To that, the teacher replies them to pray to God. And after that a very very beautiful song/prayer to God plays ( Teri Hai Zameen Tera Aasmaan - Padmini Kolhapure | Jeetendra, Neetu Singh | The Burning Train ).

How each individual viewed the impending death gives us an insight into their life and its desires. It also puts everything in perspective that how the person reaches out to God in times of distress and faced with death. And how other chose to continue to do their duty as it's their dharma and karma. How each person expressed their sorrow and unmet desires and last hopes is pitted against the little children- who only want to know what in fact is death, as a child’s heart does not think of other worldly things. Moreover, the actor reminding the passengers that although they have delayed death by overcoming fire, death shall still find them as the train was speeding without brakes. From the perspective of the movie, one can see it that although the passengers were saved from the burning train at the end (as it was a movie), in the movie of life, the train called Life is still speeding and can never be truly stopped although one may manage to delay or stop some of its troubles for a while....

This somehow reminds one of the Islamic ideas where God urges one that each soul shall taste death and so not to be too attached to the Dunya. Man may build long towers and try to protect himself from floods or other calamities, but the Angel of Death would still find him...So the idea is to continuously remember God (Dhikr) and not just when faced with life-threatening disaster alone...

Interestingly, I happened to remember a small anecdote related to this movie though. I still vividly remember once I was waiting for a train with my mother in India and had to take the train to get somewhere. As soon as I heard the train whistle and saw the train, the first thing that captured my eyes and also caused my heart to sink was the name of the train as it had the name “Superfast Express” on it. I obviously remembered that movie and how the doomed train in it shared same name and all through the travel I was panicking (although nobody knew about it) as I was certain the train would crash and burn. I now look back and understand now but, in any case, I continue to highly despise travel (any kind) or any sort anywhere (especially in the country called India).

A popular Sufi rock song of the 90s era

I wanted to share a song that is so nostalgic from the 90s era. It's a Sufi rock song that originally hails from the Pakistani pop band Junoon (featuring Salman Ahmed on the guitars). First this is the song:

Junoon - Sayonee (Official Music Video)

I did not know until recently that the story of the song evokes folk tale of Sassi-Pannu about separation from divine/Beloved (Sayonee: Lamenting the Cruelty of Fate - The Khusrau Circle). Infact the words "kon mode muhaar" in the song actually refer to reins (muhaar) of the camel that is connected to the story that can be read at the link above.

In the music video, a boy gets kidnapped and becomes homeless and separated from his mother. He is shown striving and struggling to find his soulmate while going through innumerable hardships and even after he is grown up, the struggle does not cease, neither does the search. The boy is thus constantly on the run, almost analogous to the whirling of the Sufi dervish who is constantly spinning, that's' where the Sufism aspect of the song comes into play. Sadly, as the cruel wheel of fate keeps on spinning too, the boy never gets peace or meets his mother or the soulmate, reflecting cruel fate of some...

The song lyrics and translation (available from link Sayonee: Lamenting the Cruelty of Fate - The Khusrau Circle ) are:

Text, Transliteration, and Translation

سیّو نی

सैय्यो नी
sayyo ni
O my friends!

چین ایک پل نہیں اور کوئی حل نہیں

चैन एक पल नहीं और कोई हल नहीं
chain ek pal naheeN aur koi hal naheeN
I have not a moment of peace, and there is no solution!

کون موڑے مہار کوئی سانول نہیں

कौन मोड़े मुहार कोई सांवल नहीं
kaun moRe muhaar koi saanwal naheeN
Who shall turn the camel’s reins? My beloved is no longer here.

کیا بشر کی بساط آج ہے کل نہیں

क्या बशर की बिसात आज है कल नहीं
kya bashar ki bisaat aaj hai kal naheeN
What is a human’s worth? He is here today, but not tomorrow!

چھوڑ میری خطا تو تو پاگل نہیں

छोड़ मेरी ख़ता तू तो पागल नहीं
chhoR meri khata tu to paagal naheeN
Leave my mistakes behind, for you are not also mad!

What I find somewhat nostalgic is that I still have vivid memory connected to this song when I would hear it a lot (along with other favorite songs in my cassettes) probably around 10-12 years old. A specific vision is glued. I still remember as I heard this song I was gazing in a small mirror kept at face height on a wood platform and from the side window, the sun rays pour in right over such that I see half of my face in the mirror but other half remains so deeply illuminated that it's difficult to identify if it indeed it was me or another face but the eye color appeared to change to amber brown so it was not my eye color for sure....I wonder how human memory is so amazing that certain events /visions remain strongly imprinted connected to sounds/music....

A beautiful similarity in one of the stories of Islam and Hinduism

I wanted to share a similarity in the message of stories that I noted in one of the stories of Islam and Hinduism.

I.

First, let me talk of the story that is related to the Prophet Ibrahim (A.S). about the incident of the great fire into which the prophet was thrown by the tyrant Nimrod. There is an anecdote (although it's not explicitly stated in the holy book) that as the blazing fire leapt, a small bird was seen to carry water drops in its beak back and forth from a nearby river and making consistent efforts to help in dousing the flames. The other larger birds would mock at her act taunting that her action was no good since the tiny amounts of water would hardly have any effect on such great flames leaping up the skies. To that, the bird replied with sincerity that it knew it wouldn't be able to achieve the end result of extinguishing the flame to save the beloved prophet, but it knew in its heart that the sincere effort was what mattered and that is what was eventually significant in the eyes of God.

The link of the story are available here:

Even the Fire Couldn't Stop This Tiny Bird's Devotion to Ibrahim!

Do What You Can to Help, for Allah Will Ask What You Did Not How Much… | Amaliah

II.

Now, what I was in awe of was that I realized that a very similar theme/anecdote exists in the Ramayana connected to the Ram-Setu story with Rama. As the Vanars (monkeys) were carrying big boulders (with the name of Rama written on them) and working hard to create the bridge (setu) to Lanka, a small squirrel was seen carrying small pebbles and consistently going back and forth so it could help in the building of the bridge. The Vanars were seen making fun of her and commenting that her act was futile as it was having no contribution whatsoever in the building of the enormous structure on water. Meanwhile, Rama (incarnation of God) was present observing all things and events and quietly smiling. He then went and took the squirrel in his palm and gave his words of wisdom to the Vanar Sena stating that any effort done with pure sincere devotion is what is sacred in the eyes of God and that is never small. He also blessed the squirrel for its act immortalizing that act of devotion.

I decided to post this video of this particular sequence as no other link would do justice.

महाएपिसोड - जानिए राम सेतु बनाने में गिलहरी क्या था योगदान ? श्रीमद् रामायण

(In the video, which is actually a full episode of the series, the episode I am talking about is present from time stamp: 33:19- 38:00 minutes)

Truly, one should do their karma as it's their duty, irrespective of their strengths/ weaknesses/ limitations as every tiny bit does count (although it may not be visible physically but counts spiritually) and that the final outcome rests with God. Moreover, what I found deep was that ultimately, as each soul is answerable to God, consistently doing what is the right thing (even though you may face criticism or no support from peers or others in power) is what is true Dharma of every being...

A haunting Bollywood song-Pyar ko ho jaane do.....

Sharing a song from an old Bollywood Hindi movie (Dushman, 1998) that stands out especially because of its haunting piano music tunes at the start and throughout the song. For some reason, every time I have heard this song, it continues to mesmerize me..As I do not know what chord/ music notations is used, I would think it must be some musical notation in it that is so divine that something about the tunes/chords of this song continues to remain immortal. The song features the actor Sanjay Dutt (playing role of a Major who is blind), who helps (and falls in love) the actress Kajol who is set out to take revenge of her twin sister who was killed.

Although the actor (Major) in the movie is blind, he still manages to help the actress seek her justice and proclaim his love to the actress. Sometimes, I wonder, those who have eyes that see, still choose to remain blind..something like the poetry of Meer Taqi Meer who says that the whole garden knows, yet the rose is oblivious...

(I was getting reminded of the sher: "patta patta boota boota haal hamaara jaane hai

jaane na jaane gul hī na jaane baaġh to saara jaane hai"- Meer Taqi Meer)

Anyhow,

the video song is available here:

Pyar ko ho jaane do (Dushman 1998) - Sanjay Datt - Kajol

Also, I found the piano instrumental of it here: Pyar Ko Ho Jaane Do | Instrumental

(I have not found an authentic piano instrumental of this song online that does justice to the song though)

A thought-provoking clip

I wanted to share a clip which was supposedly shared a lot online some weeks ago, that featured an adorable little child face-to-face with her birth mother, who is seen holding the child and waiting in wonder, joy, and sheer love as her child is finally able to glimpse her face (with the aid of small eyeglasses).

The scene can be viewed at this clip: पहली बार साफ नजर आई मां बच्ची हुई भावुक,छोटी सी मासूम बच्ची का वीडियो वायरल

I also found another clip (with the same child) as well (although I am not sure if its AI or not): Heartwarming moment small baby clearly recognizes mother face after wearing glasses for first time

The reason I am posting about these clips in particular is that for some reason I kept on getting reminded of something else when I watched these clips, and first of all the lines of Surah Qaf from the holy Quran flashed before me, here they are:

"You were completely heedless of this day. We have removed the veil from your eyes, and your vision will now be sharp and strong"- Surah Qaf (Verse (50:22)

So, just as in the clips, the child is finally able to clearly see (and recognize) his earthly mother (albeit with the aid of an external veil- or eyeglasses), I was noticing the sheer similarity of that moment of being face-to-face with the Creator-God, the one whose love is equivalent to the love of seventy mothers, and how after death, on the day of judgment, the soul shall be face-to-face with the loving God and finally the veil will be lifted and eyesight made sharp (similar to the idea of putting something externally to sharpen the eyesight on earth vs. removing the earthly veil in hereafter that was clouding the eyesight of the human in the Dunya). Moreover, I was filled with awe and wondered that similar to the earthly mother who can be seen filled with immense joy at seeing her child see her own face clearly for the first time, wouldn't God who has far more love (Al-Wadud) than that, must be truly filled with love at seeing his own child whom he created. And perhaps, only then shall the human realize how he was caught up in the illusion of the Dunya and was neglecting the love of the only true one- the Loving God......

A simple yet profound Shayri from web

Sharing a very simple yet profound piece of poetry I came across, the poetry (with Urdu script and hindi words) are available here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTIRReaiaoD/

I have also typed them in one place:

"zindagi agar khwaab hui to

maut agar lajawaab hui to

tumhe laga main khamosh hoon

khamoshi meri, awaaz hui to

main yahan sabse naraaz hoon,

zindagi mujhse naraaz hui to

vo bola mohabbat nahin tumse

main bola agar behisaab hui to

main samjha hoon ki tum aaye ho

yeh agar phir teri yaad hui to

vo bola, kitna hi likha hoga,

main bola agar poori kitab hui to

muskura raha hoon main tere saamne

yeh aankh agar tere baad royi to

tumhe ye faqat shayri lagi?

ye mere dil ki aag hui to?"
